The Battle For Kau'rela

Astartes Planetfall

As Company Master Jevriel of the Dark Angels made landfall, his men were quickly beset by a swarm of Tyranid, preventing full-scale deployment. The markings on the brood indicate Hive Fleet Behemoth, the largest Tyranid invasion force previously believed defeated. Whether this is a lost splinter fleet, a resurgence or holdout of the original force, or an entirely new hive fleet is unknown.
While Jevriel advanced through Tau ruins, his flanks were attacked by monstrous creatures. To the right, a whirlwind tank and heavy weapons team were crushed by a charging Carnifex, who suffered severe wounds but limped on like an unshakable nightmare. Worse still, an immense Hive Tyrant Queen swooped down from the skies, slicing through an entire squad of marines in seconds. With the primary force surrounded and further Tyranids infesting the ruins and local flora, perhaps only the arrival of the powerful psyker Librarian Cheriel and a unit of Deathwing Terminators bought the Angels of Death enough time. Forced to move back, the Dark Angels were nonetheless able to establish a ground presence on Kau’Rela. However, the immense carnifex and ferocious Tyranid Queen now had a taste for Dark Angels and lurk somewhere in the dust clouds of the moon.

Unnoticed by both, a set of Tau drones records the battle and relays the information back to the Tau interdiction fleet hiding off the dark side of the moon.

Pre-Campaign

The moon of Kau’Rela sits on the Eastern fringe of the Ultima Segmentum of the Milky Way galaxy. Though ostensibly claimed by the Imperium of Man, no known settlement has been documented by humans. As preparation for their Fourth Sphere expansion, the Tau Empire established a set of forward colonies on the dusty moon to begin terraforming it for further habitation. Communication with the colony was lost, with only a single transmission picked up by the nearest Tau fleet: “Y’he” or Tyranids.

Several dispatches and a distress beacon were, however, intercepted by an Ad Mech probe that had previously drifted off course and been thought lost. The frequency was an older code, but it checked out. The heretical information was passed along to several sources within the Imperium, including a ranking member of the Inquisition who had just been called away and the closest Adeptus Astartes, in this case a fraction of the Dark Angels passing through. Analysis of the moon indicated that sabotage of the heretical Tau terraforming devices by one or the other of the two xenos threats had destabilized the planet core and triggered a rise in geothermal and volcanic activity. Though some notable biomass remains, much of the planet may be categorized as ash wastes. Company Master Jevriel of the Dark Angels and his men prepare to make landfall.
